Assorted Carbohydrate Sources Spelling Out 'Carbs'

We all have that one friend in our friend circle who eats like an elephant and still manages to be the one with the slimmest waist. Forget that person. They are freaks of nature with a darn good metabolism. We are talking about regular people – those who seem to smell a Cinnabon and somehow still tip the scale to the heavier side.

If you’re like this fluffy-butt cat, then you might have to think ten times before downing that bowl of pasta at the end of a hard day. Or enjoying Chinese takeout of Fried Rice and Chicken smeared in gluten flour heaven. But there’s good news. Thanks to science, studies have actually found that eating carbs is not only good for health (remember the nutrition pyramid?) but can also help you lose weight and stay fit. How the hell? Well, let’s take a look at facts and figures, shall we?

Research done by the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom claims that those who consumed carbs on a regular basis reduced their calorie intake by 10% on an average. Why? Because carbs actually make you feel fuller for longer. Imagine eating a full jacket potato for lunch. In all probability, you won’t put anything in your mouth till after 6pm.

Here’s the thing: it really isn’t what you eat, but in what quantity you eat and how it is cooked. The same potato can be wolfed down as processed potato chips, soaked in oil and dressed in salt. If you eat the same spud baked and with minimum to no butter and just a pinch of salt, it works better for you. If you need more energy for a workout, then carbs work better than a meagre kale salad.

No matter your choice of nutrition, listen to your body and approach a certified nutritionist who will give you a balanced diet suited to your lifestyle.
